Resources for Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders
The below video (40 minutes) provides an overview for law enforcement officers and first responders about working with children that have communication disorders. The video is also segmented into smaller clips so that officers can watch sequentially in meetings.
The Horse Sense for All program also provides law enforcement and first responders the opportunity to work with horses in order to learn more about how to approach children with communication disorders. These one day trainings are held at select barns across the United States.
After attending a training, those same officers and first responders will come to the barn to work directly with children who have communication disorders so that they can practice interacting with each other and role play situations that may be concerning to the child. By working together before there’s an emergency, officers report a better understanding of how to work with children who have communication disorders. At the end of the day, everyone wants the same thing which is for everyone to be safe and cared for in any situation that requires the services of first responders. Continuing education for all involved is the key.
